Revd Kevin Arkell - Vicar of Newport Minster
Welcome from Our Vicar
My name is Kevin and I am married to Hilda. We have been married over 30 years and Hilda is a retired teacher and Licensed Reader. She has been a Licensed Reader for many years and serves alongside me in parish life. We have two children, Jennifer and Catherine. Jennifer is married to Adam and lives near Romsey. Catherine lives in Imola near Bologna in Italy.
I was brought up in Havant and had my vocation nurtured at St Albans Church, West Leigh, so the return South has been welcome. As a young man I worked both in the National Westminster Bank and IBM and also as a part time youth worker. From there I entered the Church Army and went to work in Blackburn in the Muslim community and also qualified as a Social Worker.
We have always been conscious of God leading us as a family and knowing his presence taking us to new avenues of ministry beyond our wildest expectation. Throughout my ministry I have put a huge emphasis on my work with young people because it is the presence of Christ in the lives of the young that changes lives, gives new opportunities of service and brings real hope to communities.
Here on the Island, I believe we are a team who work together for the Glory of God and that we are there to serve rather than to be served. I am conscious of the high profile of the church within the Island community and also the challenges the building faces as it moves to be a church that can fulfill a need throughout the wider Island community. I look forward to meeting you when you visit the Minster.
