1170 Murder of Thomas a Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury

1175 Probable date of dedication of the new church to St Thomas of Canterbury

1538 Change of dedication to St Thomas the Apostle following the English Reformation

1650 Interment in the church of the remains of Princess Elizabeth who died aged 14, after her imprisonment in Carisbrooke Castle and the execution of her father Charles 1

1854 Laying of foundation stone of new Church by Prince Albert, now dedicated to Sts Thomas of Canterbury and 'doubting' Thomas the Apostle

1857 First service in the rebuilt Church on the Festival of St Thomas the Apostle. Remains of the Princess relocated to the Sanctuary and honoured with the present memorial

2005 Launch of the Renewal Campaign

2007 150th Anniversary of the completion of the present Church building

2008 Designation of Sts Thomas Church as Newport Minster
