The new post was the idea of Chief fire Officer Steve apter, who thought a chaplain coud help fire crews to deal with difficult situations. Like many others I find the early part of the New Year difficult – the excitement of Christmas has gone, the days are short and the weather is poor. This year I have particular cause to look towards the Spring for then Hilda, my wife, should have completed her treatment for cancer and be well on her way to recovery. I am grateful for the many individual acts of kindness, the prayer of so many and the sincere good wishes coming in from across the island. This level of support and encouragement challenges me – surely every day is good! All of us understand what it is to have days that are not good but this is God’s creation and he blesses it richly every day. When our days are difficult sometimes we loose sight that in this creation God has blessed us and continues to bless us each and every day. In the gospels we see Jesus going to people where there is real need and we see lives restored to once again enjoy this wonderful world. At Newport Minster we are seeking to build a church that celebrates God’s creation and draws together those have experienced richly blessed lives and those are seeking this blessing anew. This year is a pivotal year as we start a real programme of renewal. As so many of you have encouraged me to step forward in faith so I would encourage you to step forward in faith. God calls us to renew the life of the church and the starting point is with the commitment of its members. Here we will build a church that celebrates God’s gifts to us and his blessing over many years.
