What is the 'Spirit of 150' Campaign?
In 2007 thousands of Islanders took part in events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the rebuilding of Newport Minster. Enough was donated during that year for the Friends to begin the renewal work. The 'Spirit of 150' will eventually achieve the target of £3m needed to complete the whole programme.
What is so special about this Church?
For generations the Church has been an important resource for the town of Newport, with tremendous potential. It is the premier Island Church, a focal point for the Island community and a landmark that embodies the story of the Crown and Church in England. For generations Newport Minster has been a much valued centre for prayer, pastoral care and cultural activities at the heart of the Island. As it has done for the last 800 years.
And the cultural activities?
Since the start of the Renewal Campaign in 2006, there has been a dramatic increase in the variety and number of events in the church. Ranging from a visit by the world renowned Bach Choir, to the Isle of Wight College Awards ceremony. The number of events in 2008 was 80 over 162 days: in 2006 there had been just 6. By funding the creation of a performance space and stage lighting the Friends have helped make this possible.
